DR. SAMUEL WEINSTEIN

Paul Harris Fellow

Samuel Weinstein, M.D., is the Director of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.

Dr. Weinstein has been an integral member of The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore since his arrival in 2005. Over the past two years, Dr. Weinstein has attracted national media attention for his life-saving heart surgeries on international children. Relying on the invaluable assistance of Gift of Life International, Dr. Weinstein performed surgery on five Iraqi children with congenital heart conditions. This life-saving surgery is not available in their country.

Recently, the press featured a follow-up story on Dr. Weinstein and a nine-year old child from El Salvador. In 2006, Dr. Weinstein donated his own blood to this boy during an operation in El Salvador. While performing complex surgery with Dr. Robert Michler, Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Montefiore, Dr. Weinstein scrubbed out momentarily so he could donate his own rare-type blood to the child. In August 2007, Dr. Weinstein performed a follow-up surgery on this young boy at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, reuniting them once again. Earlier this summer, much attention was generated over the life-saving congenital defect surgery Dr. Weinstein performed on an eleven-year old boy from Nigeria who was sponsored by the Rotary Club of the Bronx. Dr. Weinstein is proud of the Pediatric Heart Center team and the excellent care they provide to Montefiore’s young patients every day.

Dr. Weinstein is a member of Montefiore Medical Center’s Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, which has a long tradition of medical excellence, research leadership and advancing the state of cardiac care.

Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Weinstein is a cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, and received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He completed his internship and residencies in both general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Before joining Montefiore’s team, Dr. Weinstein was an Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio at The Ohio State University Medical Center. An outstanding surgeon, Dr.Weinstein has furthered innovative cardiothoracic surgical techniques, such as hybrid surgery, which minimizes the need for invasive procedures. He is the author of over 100 publications and presentations.

Dr. Weinstein credits the success of the cardiac program to the strength of the Pediatric Heart Center at Montefiore, stating “all members of the department of pediatric cardiology, CHAM ICU, anesthesia department, perfusion team and nursing staff bring considerable strength and skills towards the care of the surgical and interventional patients. We are proud to be able to offer these skills to Gift of Life.”

The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center

One of the most technologically advanced children’s hospitals in the world, the $120 million 106-bed Children’s Hospital at Montefiore opened in October 2001. Family-centered care is the Hospital’s guiding philosophy and is evident in its family-friendly facilities and programs where parents play active roles in their child’s care. Besides a new children’s sleep center, the Children’s Hospital includes a new pediatric epilepsy center; a pediatric emergency room; an intensive care unit for children; a center for communications disorders to help children with speech, hearing and language problems; and a day hospital for patients who require several hours or a full day of treatments. The Gift of Life/Rachel Cooper Heart Program at the Children’s Hospital has provided life-saving open heart surgery to needy children from around the world, through the assistance of Rotary Clubs in the New York metropolitan area.
